This is a simulation of the genetic engineering of human insulin in E. Coli bacteria. A reading passage introduces the students to the basic concepts of genetic engineering. Students are then guided through a paper simulation of the genetic engineering of human insulin in bacteria. Only paper, scissors and tape are the only materials required the simulation. This eight page activity culminates with 17 questions exploring the concepts worked through in this activity. The activity has been correlated to the Common Core Reading and Writing Learning Standards, Next Generation Science Standards, as well as the performance indicators of the New York State Living Environment core curriculum.
