This presentation explains how to set-up genetic pedigrees and proceeds to show you a fictional family. At the end is a great review to see what you have learned. I would use the PowerPoint before using the worksheet. This usually takes about 20 minutes.
This document follows a fictional family over the course of four generations. This fictional story starts with Selma and Gregor who have three children. Unfortunately, Gregor suffers from cystic fibrosis. As the family grows over the course of four generations, students will need to track the recessive allele and make predictions on the genotypes of future generations.
Students will begin to simply fill in preexisting pedigrees, but as the story progresses, they must create from scratch the family pedigree based upon the limited information presented. At the end, students will examine the entire four generation pedigree and be able to witness the CF gene move from generation to generation.
I use this lab analysis in class and have the students in groups of 2 so they can discuss their answers with a partner. This will take students about 45-60 minutes to complete. A teacher answer key is provided.
