This activity will help students understand the relationship between the traits we see (phenotype) and the alleles donated by our parents (genotype). Students will create an alien with a variety of traits randomly received from parent 1 or parent 2. They love making their unique, little alien creations. Leave as is or modify to fit your grade level.
This activity is a little more in-depth than just flipping a coin and getting a trait. I use it with my 7th grade middle school science classes. It shows how the chromosomes from parent 1 and 2 combine to create a random set up traits. This activity can be easily converted into just flipping a coin and picking your alien traits.
