With this project, students select a bird found in their home state, research that bird, and create a birdhouse or feeder out of cardboard that is specifically designed to meet the needs of their bird. During the project they will research their bird and the essentials of building birdhouses and then use cardboard boxes, scissors, tape, glue, etc. to create their birdhouse.
Included are the following 6 parts with questions for each:
Part 1: Bird Research & Questions
Part 2: Birdhouse Feeder Research & Questions
Part 3: Making Decisions and Drawing a Blueprint & Questions
Part 4: Building the Birdhouse Feeder (list of materials)
Part 5: Blueprint Analysis Questions
Part 6: Comparative Analysis Questions
Each of the sections could be adapted to younger or older grades by changing the style or number of questions. My 8th grade students absolutely loved this project! They were very interested in their birds and the ways in which they could best meet their birds needs. The whole project took about 6 days (one for each part), and my students worked in groups of 3.
