Gregor Mendel visited my classroom last year! (I had fun role playing Mendel and my kids enjoyed it!) The students really got into the activity as Mendel personally explained the results of his research on inheritance in pea plants. Watching this DVD, students will learn about meiosis, segregation of alleles, Punnett squares, genetic probabilities, Mendelian inheritance, genotypes, phenotypes, and the application of Mendel’s rules in modern day genetic counseling - using Tay-Sach’s disease as an example case.
Order the DVD (shipping is free) and then download the worksheet that students can fill out while watching the DVD. (The worksheet download is free.) An answer key comes with the student worksheet.
This packet of free printed materials contains the following:
1. Student copy of the worksheet (Please feel free to photocopy a class set of these.)
2. Teacher’s answer key for the student copy of the worksheet
I have found this activity to be an effective (and fun!) way to help my kids gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the work of Gregor Mendel.
