In this hands-on lab, students will discover and investigate the traits of rice. They will observe and compare four different types of rice and identify similarities and differences among each type of rice. Students will then complete several different analysis questions that ask them to compare/contrast, reflect, and to develop possible explanations for why there were differences among grains.
This lab is an easy, effective way to show students that all living things inherit traits, not just humans. Other than purchasing several types of rice and labeling cups, there is minimal prep to this lab activity. It's great as a reinforcement to the topic of inherited traits. It could even be a great lesson to leave for a substitute since it's hands-on, engaging, and something that will keep the students' attention.
An answer key is included, and the document is in Word to make editing possible. Thanks!!
