I made this activity as a formative assessment for NGSS MS-LS3-2. Before students are introduced to content, they will be given a few minutes to try the matching activity as a pre-assessment. We will then watch "Crash Course Biology #9: Heredity" and students will make changes to their activity board. Next, we will begin Harry Potter Genetics from the NIH and make more revisions. After I have checked students boards for accuracy, students will fill in their own graphic organizer to use throughout our genetics unit.
To prepare for this activity, I attached and laminated the blank graphic organizers to a piece of large construction paper and cut out the matching pieces. To scaffold this activity, you may choose to leave some of the illustrations and examples attached to the graphic organizer. I also included a fun label for the outside of the folder! If you would like each student to complete the matching activity independently, you may want to use the cut and paste version that is included.
