Creature Invasion! Genetics Project by Miss Middle School Teacher~
This middle school project is a fun, interactive, and creative way to teach genetics! Students work to create creatures through simulated meiosis and punnett squares. They then go on to create the next generation of creatures. The project takes students through 5 phases:
1) creating a zygote creature based on traits of "parent creatures" by flipping a coin 2) determining characteristics of your creature based on the penny outcomes and a "creature traits guide" 3) constructing your creature 4) putting out a "personal ad" to find another suitable creature in the classroom to 'marry' 5) creating the next generation of aliens based on the parent traits of the newly married creatures (punnett squares are created to help students realize the probability of their baby aliens getting each trait). I've also included a few discussion questions that we use at the end.
This project is highly engaging! I've included student directions for each of the 5 phases and the student work pages to go along with them.
