The focus of this project is genetic variation and patterns of inheritance. This is designed to follow up a foundation of the basics of genetics and inheritance and expand on that.

This includes everything you need to use as a sub plan.  You can print and go that morning.

It is also a great project to use in your classes.

This plan relies on YouTube videos to teach the lesson, if you do not have access to YouTube these lessons will not work.

There are information pages:

Specific for this plan:

Students will have a chance to watch a few videos (a YouTube playlist is provided).

Students will be completing notes during the videos. I have included 2 versions of each set of notes:

•Completed (serves as key)

•Blank (just basic organization)

I have also included informational texts to work on for the remainder of class. They could be assigned as small group work or individuals, you know your classes best.

There are 4 informational texts in total. I have included a student research sheet for the texts.

The 4 informational text topics are:

•Malaria and Sickle Cell

•Queen Victoria’s Curse

•Science of Goldendoodles

•GMOs and Pesticides. Harmful or Helpful?

I would suggest discussing the articles and notes upon your return.

Following this lesson, students will be ready to discuss the variety of inheritance patterns including:

  • co-dominance
  • incomplete dominance
  • Mendelian traits
  • sex-linked traits
  • polygenic traits
  • pleiotropic genes

Students will also be familiar with the following vocabulary:

  • autosomes
  • somatic cells
  • diploid
  • haploid
  • gametes
  • polyploid
  • epistasis
  • alleles
  • phenotypes
  • heterozygous
  • homozygous.
