This download is an activity that involves students recording trials, being able to record and create genotypes, to identify phenotype based on created genotype. There are two versions of this lab, one is meant as a way to introduce the concept of homozygous and heterozygous by asking if genes are the same, and the other version directly asks how many are homozygous and heterozygous.
To use, you will need clear tiles and colored tiles. If you are like me and didn’t have those tiles, I laminated a piece of construction paper and I just kept the laminator going to get my clear pieces. Next I cut the paper/ laminated sheets into strips and then again into squares. I counted out 10 of each and put them into a brown paper bag where students could pull them out. The students will stack the two square tiles with the clear tile on top and be able to tell what color they saw.
Picture guides are given to prepare the activity.
