This is my favorite way to teach genetics. Using this hands-on activity, your students will learn all about phenotypes, genotypes, alleles, genes, chromosomes, dominant, recessive, incomplete dominance, and more. This activity could be used to introduce Punnett Squares too!
Please note that this middle school version does not go into evolution. The elementary school version hints at evolution.
These are the additional materials you will need:
-plastic easter eggs (about 20 purple, orange, blue, yellow, and green)
(In the activity, I purposely leave the color names blank so you can use what colors you have. Green, blue, and yellow are definitely ideal. Purple and orange can be substituted for whatever you have on hand.)
- white pipe cleaners cut into pieces
- small pieces of paper
- googly eyes
- hot glue
The activity is spread over 7 days. Each day has a short activity and questions, data tables, and graphs to fill out. Each page has specific student instructions to follow. Check out my preview to see a collage of the student pages (18 pages) and the actual teacher instruction pages (5 pages)!
Because of the nature of the activity, no answer key is included for most of the pages. The student answers will vary greatly depending on which egg they have at their desk. There are answer key pages for 4 Punnett Square practice pages.
If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to us on the question and answer section of my store and we will get back to you quickly!
