PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Want to teach genetics using real organisms actual scientists use instead of cartoon characters or made-up examples? In this lesson illustrated with helpful model organisms who give students tips along the way, students will learn a step-by-step process to complete Punnett square genetics problems. And here is a free PowerPoint with images and videos of the organisms in the tutorial!

These are important concepts for students to grasp before they can move onto more difficult problems involving F1 & F2 crosses, incomplete dominance, and much more.

Before your students complete this lesson, I highly recommend you use my lesson called Genetics with Model Organisms 1: Pre-Punnett Square Skills to make sure your students understand the concepts of genotype, phenotype, heterozygous, homozygous, dominant, and recessive.

When teaching genetics to students with a wide range of abilities, I find some students can teach themselves by reading my tutorial type writing and instructions. For students who need more help, I go through each step of the learning process with them. I project the handout on the wall or SmartBoard and I can fill it out with them, explaining as we fill out example questions together.

In this lesson there are 19 (most are multi-part) questions that help students develop the following skills:
Review matching questions to review the concepts of genotype, phenotype, heterozygous, homozygous, dominant, and recessive.
Determine gametes from parent genotypes
Determine the genotype and gametes for parents from a paragraph
Punnett Square Completion
Determining genotype fractions and percentages of offspring
Determining phenotype fractions percentages of offspring

There are questions for every combination of parent genotypes:
Homozygous recessive x homozygous recessive
Heterozygous x homozygous recessive
Heterozygous x homozygous dominant
Heterozygous x heterozygous
Homozygous dominant x homozygous recessive
Homozygous dominant x homozygous dominant
