Genius Hour is time set aside in class for students to study their passion or master a new skill once a week for a set amount of time. Genius Hour was developed and impacted by Google, which allows its engineers to spend 20% of their time to work on any pet project they wanted. The idea was if people were allowed to work on something that interested them, productivity would go up. More than 50% of Google’s products have been created during this creative time period. Gmail is an example of one of those projects.
Students take ownership of their learning through this project-based unit which fosters student innovation, creativity, perseverance and life-long learning.
