This is a great way to introduce students to the concept of genocide as well as what happened in Rwanda.
The first page is a genocide word map where in the small circle the students can write the word genocide and its definition. The larger circle can be filled with historical examples and associations that the students come up with through discussion. The outer square should have strong adjectives that describe the topic of genocide vividly.
The reading summarizes the events in Rwanda in a manner that is easy to understand. I usually have students read and highlight one main idea per paragraph and write a summary using 2 of their highlighted quotes describing the events of the Rwandan genocide.
