Genre Cloze notes can help reinforce or introduce a genre. The following genres are included:
In my class (8th grade), I use these to introduce a genre. Each set of notes has four sections: Purpose, Examples, Features, and Vocabulary. I explain to my students that they need to use the words at the bottom of page to fill in the blanks. I give them about 5-10 minutes to work on their own, then consult a partner and make any changes. We review what should be in the blanks and discuss any misconceptions. Next, I allow them five more minutes to study with a partner to reinforce the information.
Other teachers at my school have used the notes as a review and for stations.
My students love the cloze notes and report that they are "like a puzzle." I have also noticed far greater recall in discerning between genres.
You will notice within each set of notes a few places that state "see pg.__" this is NOT a part of the fill-in-the blank portion. I use this to make connections between other pages in our interactive notebook that will provide even further explanation and detail. For example, under the vocabulary section, the word Plot is defined and followed with "see pg.__". This means that as we study fiction further, we will take more detailed notes on plot and the student should see the connection between these two notes pages.
The cloze notes can also be used without additional references. The attachment is in power point format and can easily be edited for your individual needs.
I hope you enjoy this product as much as I do!
