Learning Objective

Students will read 12 short book summaries and determine the genre of each.

This is a hands-on, FUN activity to practice identification of genre! It also makes a creative bulletin board or school hallway display! It can also be used as a novel entry in an interactive notebook!

Students cut out minibooks and fold them so that the title is on the front cover, and a brief description is on the back cover. Based on those two things, students must determine the genre of the book. Then they cut out their books and make it into a "Genre Book Display". Very detailed directions are included.

You can also integrate the skill of visualization or making predictions into this activity. After students have read the front cover title and back cover summary of each mini book, you could have them open their book and draw a picture of what they think might appear in the book or write a few sentences about their predictions for this book.

Genres included are:

Fairy Tale

Tall Tale

Realistic Fiction

Historical Fiction

Science Fiction
