Don't let genres be a mystery in your classroom! Teach students how to determine different genres with labeling your classroom library. Label each book in your room according to genre so students understand genres: fantasy, realistic fiction, mystery, biography, informational, poetry, historical fiction traditional literature, and science fiction. This can be taught as early as first grade and used all the way up until middle school. Place the label on the front of the book and wrap it around the spine. Teach each genre at the beginning of the year and reinforce throughout the year. This is an easy way to manage a classroom library and let kids take responsibility into their own hands with their classroom books.
