Are you looking for a year round independent reading program that will get your students excited and motivated to read different types of genres?
Book-Its... What are they?
I am a firm believer that if a teacher does not hold students accountable for monitoring independent reading, the only reading that will be happening are the students who are natural born readers. What about the other students who have not yet found their love for reading? Through the years, I have realized the importance of exposing students to many different genres of books and holding them to a specific schedule to explore books in a timely manner. My heart sings when I hear a student recommend Around the World in 180 Days or discuss why books won a Newberry Award with other students in their free time. This program allows students to find and read books that they would not normally read and prove to you that they are not just reading, but thinking as they are reading. Reading logs that parents sign simply do not work. Many find a way to beat they system, but not with this program. This is an all-inclusive, yearlong reading program guaranteed to make students more interested in reading while helping them work on time management skills at the same time.
It has taken me over ten years to perfect this program. Every year I continue to find ways to modify the program so that my students get the most out of it. I have kept in mind that it has to be engaging and somewhat realistic for the students to complete. I have also kept in mind that the parents should always be active in their child’s reading lifestyle. Above all, I have kept in mind that this needs to be a program that is easy for teachers to implement, manage and grade.
Students choose genre based books to read independently at home or in school while critically filling out genre specific forms.
