They are perfect for state test prep. They align with reading common core standards. Everything you and your students need is included. Just add books.
The purpose of Genre Book Reports is to:
•Teach students to analyze their reading and self-select appropriate goals.
•Individualize reading - giving students the responsibility and freedom to explore books.
•Encourage students to understand, differentiate, and explore multiple genres
•Allow students to choose books at their “just right” level.
•Push students to think more critically about their reading.
•Expect students to work independently (while the teacher conferences or assesses others).
•Assess comprehension for student self-selected books.
•Provide students with daily practice - fiction and nonfiction - of reading skills tested annually by the state (CCSS).
•Know that students can learn, practice, and enjoy reading ALL at the same time. ☺

Additionally, reading conferences can be tied to the book reports. Review and discuss the student’s reading record and reading goals. Then choose 3-5 cells from a genre study worksheet. Use the report to engage the student in an authentic reading conversation. Record notes and observations directly on the worksheet. When the worksheet is complete, store it in the 3” teacher binder. The Genre Book Reports provide the evidence needed to accurately assess student reading. You will have a record of each student’s books, authors, comprehension, genres explored, book level, number of pages read, and effort.
