Here are some ideas for how you can use these mentor texts. First, you can post the papers on a bulletin board or pocket chart to show children what good writing looks like. The mentor texts serve as a great visual reminder, anchor chart and/or rubric for the students as they craft their own writing pieces. Students can refer to the anchor papers to remember what a 4, 3, 2 and 1 look like. Another idea is to make them part of an interactive bulletin board. The students can label each paper with a 4, 3, 2 or 1. Additionally, you could also use the papers as a springboard for a discussion on the qualities of good writing. Students can work in groups and decide what number to assign each paper. Finally, another idea is to bind the papers together as a book. This book could serve as a reference manual for the students as they work on crafting pieces in different genres.
Many teachers have shared with me that these mentor texts have helped their students become better writers! I hope they can help you, too!
