This middle school level “Genres Zip-Around Activity and Worksheet” is fun. You can watch as your students teach themselves about 30 genres. There’s no off-task students in this activity. It’s a great way to begin your year in reading or language arts class and in the library for classes. It’s also a great review before standardized tests for reading or language arts. The two-page worksheet is also great for independent work. Answer key included.
Make one copy of the sheets for “Genres Zip-Around.” Cut apart the 30 strips, and place in a zip-bag. When ready, hand out strips to students until all are given out. Sometimes a student may have two strips. That’s okay. Ask the student who has “Question 1” to read his. The person with the answer goes second, and so forth “zipping” around the room until all questions are read and all answers are given. The person who went first with Question 1 will also be the last person to answer if they have mastered the process correctly. If you have more than 30 students, give the rest a copy of the “Genres Zip-Around” to watch for problems as they happen. They can monitor the Zip-Around as the students read aloud their strips of paper.
