This SMARTBoard lesson for 2nd-3rd grade students introduces different genres of literature, and how to identify books by genre. It is interactive, requiring students to erase "ink" or move circles to reveal information, keeping students engaged in the lesson. After introducing and discussing the aspects of non-fiction and fictional literature, both categories are split into sub-genres. Realistic fiction, fantasy, historical fiction, mystery, traditional literature and sci-fi are all discussed, at which point students should be asked if any books they are reading fall into these categories. The same is done for non-fiction (Informational, Biography, Autobiography). Finally, a matching game can be played by the class, or by each student if they have access to this file on a classroom computer.
