Geography: Creating a Culture, What is Culture, Five Geographical Themes, Understanding Culture.

Note: STUDENT MUST HAVE A WORKING KNOWLEDGE OF THE FIVE GEOGRAPHICAL THEMES PRIOR TO THIS LESSON.

OBJECTIVE:
o Students will review the five geographical themes.
o Students will be able to apply the five geographical themes to real-world experiences.
o Students apply the five geographical themes and will create a culture based upon them.

ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS:

o What is the difference between absolute and relative location?
o What physical and cultural characteristics make a place special?
o How do people, goods, and ideas move throughout the world?
o What are the common characteristics that are shared by a region?

MATERIALS:
o Three-prong notebook per student
o Markers, crayons and/or colored pencils
o Five Geographical Themes Activity Sheet, One per student.
o Five Geographical Themes Activity Packet,
o Internet access
o Class set of atlases
o Hole punch


PREPARATION:
o Set up the classroom desks or tables so that students are sitting in groups of twos or threes.
o Duplicate Geographical Themes Game, cut and place in bag.
o Duplicate packets, one per student.


INTRODUCTION: (20 minutes)
Review the five geographical themes using the following video with whatever technology you have to do so:

Play the Five Geographical Themes Review Game.


SCHEDULE

Day One:
(1) Watch video
(2) Play Geographical Themes Game
(3) Complete the brainstorming activity
(2) Create title page with your culture’s name on it
(3) Complete the “location” activity.

Day Two:
(1) Complete the “place” activity.

Day Three:
(2) Complete the “human environment Interaction” activity.

Day Four:
(1) Complete the “movement” activity and “region” activity.

Day Six:
(1) Presentations. See closure and evaluation.

CLOSURE / EVALUATION:
Students, alongside their groups, will present their Geographical Themes Interactive Notebook while the audience takes notes.
