Special Note: The New Social Studies standards are heavy on Inquiry-Based skills. The lessons in this unit are designed to put the learning in the hands of the students while the teacher is the facilitator.

This unit was designed using the Backward Design curriculum model.

• I designed instruction that teaches what will be assessed. (It focuses on inquiry-based learning, the hallmark of the new social studies standards.)
The lesson plan format is based upon the 5Es. (Facilitation tips are included.)

-it details what Social Studies standards, as well as what ELA Anchoring standards, Science Practices, and Math Practices are covered

4) Essential Questions:
-overarching questions for the unit
5) Vocabulary Journal:
-this is a student document that is specific to the unit

Unit 1: Geography-What Our Community Looks Like
• Lesson 1: Creating and Using Maps
