Geography Voting Patterns:

Using Geography to Determine Voting Patterns

The electoral college and voting patterns can be a difficult concept to teach. When students look at a map showing red & blue states – why does one party win over another? How can you use maps to teach voting patterns?

This activity is designed to demystify these concepts. Students will analyze the results of the 2008 Presidential Election to determine what role geography plays in elections. Your student will begin the lesson by listening to a song – What information can they learn by analyzing the lyrics? Students will then be guided through both voting maps and cartographs as they learn about the voting patterns of the United States. An annotated map will be created as they tie geographic concepts into these voting patterns. What inferences can they make? Finally, students will be challenged with a writing assignment to close the lesson. This lesson is also designed to be embedded into an Interactive Student Notebook with a Preview, Guided Notes and a Processing assignment.

In this activity you will receive:
-lyrics to a song to introduce the concept
-a reading to guide your students through the lesson
-a map to annotate with notes
-an Interactive PowerPoint presentation
-Preview, Notes, and Processing Assignment for an Interactive Student Notebook
