This is a unit of study for a High School level Earth Science course about the history of the planet from the dawn of the solar system to the arrival of humans.
This document is divided into sections for each of the Eras in geologic time, the Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic. There are activities for each period which will help students to gain an understanding of what geologists call “Deep Time”, the changes in the atmosphere that lead to the development of early life, and the rise of animals from early simple aquatic life to modern man.
This is a fascinating part of the study of Earth Science and one that is often overlooked in textbooks and other sources. These activities are intended to be student driven and research based and allow your students to gain a deeper appreciation for the history of the world on which they live.
I developed this unit after several years and have used and refined the material multiple times to get to how it is now. I have been teaching Earth Science for over 10 years and majored in Geology in college.
This unit is designed to align with the following NGSS Standards
HS-ESS 1 - 5, HS-ESS 1 - 6, HS-ESS 2 - 2, HS-ESS 2 - 7.
