This geologic timeline activity works well with 7th - 10th grade earth science students. Included are six different tables of events on six different masters so that even with a class of 36, having small groups of three ensures six different timelines with only two small groups making the same one (although all time lines have all four eras). The activity sheet guides students through creating a scale of geologic time and then has students use that math to calculate how far down their timeline their events should be marked. The timelines are then integrated in a "Geologic Timeline Race" sheet where students must investigate the timelines made by other students to fill out their sheet. Homework and extension ideas are also included.
This activity can be used - and has been used - with all levels of academic ability: with my honors students, I typically hand out the activity sheet after putting them into small groups and ask them to come up with a strategy for creating the timeline - I give very little explanation. With classes that have higher needs kids, I will guide them through the thought process of making a scale model, and do some of the math with them until they seem comfortable.
The product contains:
• Activity sheet masters for printing
• Geologic Timeline Race Master
• Answer key for geologic time race
• Teacher's Guide with tips and ideas for homework/extensions
