Use as much or as little as you want. You can use the logic puzzle as a stand-alone assignment, or have students use it to create a geological timeline that illustrates periods, epochs, and eras.
While this project could be modified to introduce natural selection and evolutionary theory, it has been deliberately avoided in the creation of this project due to my state standards, and in several places has been deliberately put out of sequence. You may choose to modify it to suit your own state standards.
