The study of rocks and minerals just wouldn’t be complete without learning about rocks that are plain on the outside but are “gems of mineral crystals” on the inside! That is why I include a mini unit about geodes in our Earth Science study of rocks and minerals.
The mini unit is divided into 3 Activities that can be taught over several class periods:
• Activity 1 - The Bitaba Bird Geode Facts by Carol Moore (With graded activity)
• Activity 2 - Making Simulated Geodes in Class
• Activity 3 - Writing Geode Acrostics
This lesson is written for third grade, but can be adapted easily through grade 5.
