A multi-academic and multi-level LAB on chemical weathering and erosion. NO MATERIALS ARE REQUIRED but this lab can be done with materials as well. The instructor has full control as to what instructions are given and what lab procedure is performed. Fantastic for regular education, special education, and inclusive classrooms.
This LAB has 2 differentiated levels: one LOADED with COLOR IMAGES and PICTURES and one geared towards students collecting their own data. Content emphasis is on chemical weathering - focused specifically on the process of carbonic acid and the weathering of limestone bedrock (how caves and sinkholes are created).
This is an engaging and dynamic lab that kids love to do incorporating arithmetic and chemistry in combination with the scientific method.
Lab 1: No Materials Needed - Special Education, Inclusive Classrooms, or College Prep Classes.
-Students receive background information on how rocks weather diving into the details of chemical weathering and the specific processes of: hydrolysis, oxidation, carbonic acid, and natural acids. Images provided as well. Formative assessment questions follow related to chemical weathering and the connection to climate.
-In order to supply students with a connection between chemical weathering and caves, content is provided to make the link to limestone and carbonate rocks.
-The actual lab is broken up into all the necessary part that is fun for all! Detailed materials, lab procedure (IMAGES/Data Collection/Arithmetic), Data Tables, Data Analysis, Graph Construction, and Conclusion Questions.
This is a very special lab that all general, physical, and earth science teachers MUST HAVE! You will love it!
Lab 2: College Prep or Honors Classes
-Materials are required. A standard lab geared towards college prep students in the general sciences with an application to physical science and earth science. The lab includes: background information, material list, lab procedures, data tables, data analysis, graph construction, and conclusion questions.
Very special cut and paste, Smartboard, or Velcro and laminate activity that challenges many learners based on how the information is presented. The instructor decides the difficulty!
This works well for any level but is GREAT for special education students or college prep learners that need an alternative assessment and may not be great at traditional labs.
Also, perfect for homeschooling!
WIDE RANGE OF ABILITY LEVELS! The application to a diverse body of learners, whether it be age or ability level, is predicated on the fact that the instructor determines the difficulty level of the whole activity or part of the activity based on what information is given and what information is not as well as how verbal questions are presented to the student(s).
This is a thorough and DYNAMIC activity that covers a ton of information about chemical weathering. This has been used as a pre-class, lab/activity, study guide, review, and assessment. This is an effective teaching tool one on one, in small groups, and as a class when using a Smart Board/Promethean Board/Projection.
A guaranteed hit all around!
A great addition to your geology and chemistry teaching library.
Within the classroom, this activity has been consistently very successful and acclaimed by students in grades 3rd – 9th within multiple types of schools - public, private, and charter.
This work has also been shared at workshops, in-services, and conferences.
