Geometric Concepts
Regular Polygons
Angles and Triangles

First Quadrant Only (Portrait: 32 x 40)
      Uses fractional points

This coordinate graphing project is fun for the student and makes a great bulletin board idea as well. Students will use their knowledge of coordinate graphing and ordered pairs to create drawings of geometric concepts and figures. This will be created by plotting ordered pairs and then connecting them with straight lines.

This activity can be a class project or something to be worked on independently when time allows. It also works as an extra credit assignment or when there is a substitute teacher.

The graph consists of points in the first quadrant using ordered pairs with some fractional points (1/2). The Regular Polygons has two points with 1/4 and one point with 3/4. A blank graph and a graph with those points already plotted are provided. When finished, they can use markers, colored pencils or other medium to enhance the project.

Included in this download:
    * Coordinate graph paper for plotting (with a light, medium and a dark grid)
    * Coordinate list
    * Full sized answer key (without the terms)
    * Full sized answer key (with the terms)
    * Sample of the completed project in color

Instructional Materials include:
   * Student Directions for Plotting Coordinates
   * Directions for Plotting Coordinates with Fractions and Decimals
   * Directions for Plotting Coordinates in Quadrant I
   * Directions for Plotting Coordinates in All Quadrants
   * Details for Plotting Coordinates with Fractions in Quadrant I
   * Details for Plotting Coordinates with Fractions in All Quadrants.

If you like this project, please let us know. There are many projects covering the entire school year and some projects are cross curricular (Sports, Patriotism, Seasons, Holidays, History, and Science). Lessons begin at 2nd grade and are appropriate for the Elementary School, Middle School and some for High School students. These projects have been used successfully at both the Elementary and Middle School levels.

All projects are copyrighted, so please don’t distribute them to all of your colleagues. Instead direct them to my Store,

NCTM Standards
Specify locations and describe spatial relationships using coordinate geometry and other representational systems.
Identify, compare, and analyze attributes of two- and three-dimensional shapes and develop vocabulary to describe the attributes;
classify two- and three-dimensional shapes according to their properties and develop definitions of classes of shapes such as triangles and pyramids;
understand relationships among the angles, side lengths, perimeters, areas, and volumes of similar objects;
create and critique inductive and deductive arguments concerning geometric ideas and relationships

Common Core Concepts

Reason with shapes and their attributes.
Recognize and draw shapes having specified attributes, such as a given number of angles or a given number of equal faces.1 Identify triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, and cubes.

Understand that shapes in different categories (e.g., rhombuses, rectangles, and others) may share attributes (e.g., having four sides), and that the shared attributes can define a larger category (e.g., quadrilaterals). Recognize rhombuses, rectangles, and squares as examples of quadrilaterals, and draw examples of quadrilaterals that do not belong to any of these subcategories.

Draw and identify lines and angles, and classify shapes by properties of their lines and angles.
Draw points, lines, line segments, rays, angles (right, acute, obtuse), and perpendicular and parallel lines. Identify these in two-dimensional figures.
Classify two-dimensional figures based on the presence or absence of parallel or perpendicular lines, or the presence or absence of angles of a specified size. Recognize right triangles as a category, and identify right triangles.

Classify two-dimensional figures into categories based on their properties.
CCSS.Math.Content.5.G.A.1 Use a pair of perpendicular number lines, called axes, to define a coordinate system, with the intersection of the lines (the origin) arranged to coincide with the 0 on each line and a given point in the plane located by using an ordered pair of numbers, called its coordinates. Understand that the first number indicates how far to travel from the origin in the direction of one axis, and the second number indicates how far to travel in the direction of the second axis, with the convention that the names of the two axes and the coordinates correspond (e.g., x-axis and x-coordinate, y-axis and y-coordinate).

Graph points on the coordinate plane to solve real-world and mathematical problems.
Represent real world and mathematical problems by graphing points in the first quadrant of the coordinate plane, and interpret coordinate values of points in the context of the situation.
Understand that attributes belonging to a category of two-dimensional figures also belong to all subcategories of that category. For example, all rectangles have four right angles and squares are rectangles, so all squares have four right angles.
