I LOVE art and adding it to math class is easy and fun!
Folding 2 dimensional nets into 3D shapes is awesome. Adding creativity to your lessons with art and hands on manipulation of the shapes will enhance comprehension of geometry and terms. Lets get started and charge up your students to love geometry. Instead of folding nets only into a simple shape, add a unique element to the lesson and watch your students laugh, engage and get busy. I find my students remember projects better and the laughter that children often bring to oral presentations of their projects and display of these also helps build confidence in public speaking. Our class bonds with these shared memories and stories.
This lessons uses the simple, CUBE.
Two artistic lesson are included in this 15 page packet. The first is of a stacked human using three cubes. I have offered suggestions on how to draw/sketch a successful face and a layout guide is provided so students can draw specific faces on certain places of the template. The second lesson offers a guide for make animal heads.
In addition to the lessons, a note page is offered with definitions, terms and formulas for the CUBE. A rubric is provided for evaluation as is a worksheet to solve for area, surface area, and volume. Included are two animals that I have drawn and you may copy and use as samples in our room to get the students started. The Common core standards also are attached for your convenience.
This is another cool Geometry Lesson with ART: Geometry, Measurement, Using ART for Shapes and Nets
