This packet contains daily geometry related bell ringer assignment problems (Monday-Thursday) as well as an entire page for written reflection on Friday. This packet covers the entire fourth nine weeks of the school year (plus an additional tenth week just in case your school calendar has an extra week built in to the fourth grading period for the year). The daily assignment problems come from a collection of sources that I have gathered over the years. Several of the problems are directly related to standardized test questions that the students may see on an "end of instruction" exam as well as the ACT. Some of the problems are fun puzzles that require the students to use algebraic thinking in order to solve and other problems are over remedial math topics to keep the students fresh on important algebra concepts.
As the students get further along in the packet, the questions will grow in difficulty along with the content being taught in geometry. I print off this packet before school starts and hand it to the student on the first Monday of the fourth nine weeks grading period. Each period, once the bell rings for class, the expectation is that the students will be in their seats and be working on the problem for the day. The problem will also be projected up on the board just in case a student forgets what day or week we are working on in the packet. Each week only has four bell ringer problems to be used on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. For each Friday, I have included a full lined page for the students to give a written reflection of what they have learned during the week. In my classroom, there might be several times when we won't use the bell ringer packet on Friday and we will replace that time in class with a quiz or test. However, if you are wanting to keep the bell ringer routine constant throughout all five days of the week, then I would encourage you to use that extra page as a weekly math journal for the students.
I use a very simple method for grading the bell ringer packet in my classroom. At the beginning of the 9 weeks grading period, I give each student 50 points for their bell ringer packet in my grade book. As long as they use the allotted time in class to work on the daily problem (or at the very least, discuss the problem and try to understand it) they will be able to keep their 50 points. However, if a student choses to not use the allotted time to work on the problem, I will deduct 10% (5 points) from their bell ringer grade.
