This was used in Grade 8 in Canada. More often than not, students performed poorly on the unit assessment on surface area and volume. We decided to instead do a final unit task that showed students understanding of surface area and volume of cylinders, triangular prisms/pyramids, and rectangular prisms/pyramids.
The final project has students examining cereal boxes and creating a better way of packaging the same amount of cereal but using less cardboard box. This is a performance task used in place of a unit test. Usually takes a week to complete, with students needing to bring in packaging to measure.
