Get your students talking about shapes in the environment with this PowerPoint e-book. Packed with real-life photos of everyday scenes, this slideshow gives students many opportunities to use geometric and positional word vocabulary, strengthening their oral language skills and their understanding of flat and solid shapes and their names.
This slideshow was designed to be projected or displayed on a large screen and read aloud to students. The first several slides contain simple informational text to support student understanding of beginning geometry concepts. Beginning with slide 16, the remainder of the presentation simply contains photographs of real-life scenes. These photos give students many opportunities to search for and identify shapes as well as to describe their locations relative to other items in the picture. This slideshow supports oral language development by allowing students to practice using two and three-dimensional shape names and positional words in sentences, solidifying their understanding of this vocabulary.
-Use a “turn and talk” strategy to allow all children the opportunity to interact with each slide.
-Because this slideshow is very long (66 slides), it can be broken up and used a little at a time.
-Discussing one or two of the photographs is a great way to open a whole group geometry lesson.
-If you have access to an interactive board (SMART Board, etc.) you may wish to have students come up to the board to
circle the shapes they find. This increases engagement and allows students to move a little bit!
