This is a writing RAFT assignment that covers geometry concepts such as parallel lines and transversals, rotations, reflections, and translations of figures.
A RAFT assignment requires students to write as a specific Role, to a designated Audience, in a certain Format, about a Topic. This assignment gives students three different RAFT options that cover geometry concepts.
This assessment includes an introduction into the RAFT concept as well as a description of each three options. Each option has its own page which includes a thorough explanation of expectations as well as a graphic organizer to help students organize their thoughts. Students are required to fill out the graphic organizer (this allows the teacher to ensure the student has the correct mathematical concepts when grading) as well as complete the writing assignment according to the designated format.
Some formats allow for creativity such as by writing a "Party Invitation" while others allow for comedy when writing a "Romantic Letter". The students work is graded using a scoring rubric (included).
A sample RAFT is included that can be provided to the students so they understand the expectations of the assignment.
Many students might seem surprised by this type of assessment, but it can allow students to showcase their creativity and writing skills in the mathematics class. This is a great differentiation tactic that will might spark the curiosity and excitement in some of the more hesitant students.
