This 36 page SMARTBoard file is just what you need to help your students understand how to identify, sort, and classify polygons. I created and used this file with my 4th grade students with great success, but it is suitable for grades 3-5.
This file covers all polygons from triangles all the way up to pentadecagons, (15-sided polygons!) Through interactive and engaging lessons, students learn about the attributes of polygons and how to identify, sort, and classify them. Students sort different polygons by number of sides. They classify triangles and quadrilaterals according to their lines and angles. They also learn the difference between regular and irregular polygons. I do offer a bundled version of this file that includes a 36-page printable pdf file, but I wanted to offer this version with the SMARTBoard file only, in case you have your own worksheets for students, and just want the visual lessons to introduce the concepts and vocabulary. Common Core Standards Addressed:
• 3.G.A.1: Understand that shapes in different categories (e.g., rhombuses, rectangles, and others) may share attributes (e.g., having four sides), and that the shared attributes can define a larger category (e.g., quadrilaterals). Recognize rhombuses, rectangles, and squares as examples of quadrilaterals, and draw examples of quadrilaterals that do not belong to any of these subcategories.
• 4.G.A.1 Draw points, lines, line segments, rays, angles (right, acute, obtuse), and perpendicular and parallel lines. Identify these in two-dimensional figures.
• 4.G.A.2 Classify two-dimensional figures based on the presence or absence of parallel or perpendicular lines, or the presence or absence of angles of a specified size. Recognize right triangles as a category, and identify right triangles.
• 4.G.A.3 Recognize a line of symmetry for a two-dimensional figure as a line across the figure such that the figure can be folded along the line into matching parts. Identify line-symmetric figures and draw lines of symmetry.
• 5.G.B.3 Understand that attributes belonging to a category of two-dimensional figures also belong to all subcategories of that category. For example, all rectangles have four right angles and squares are rectangles, so all squares have four right angles.
• 5.G.B.4 Classify two-dimensional figures in a hierarchy based on properties
I recommend teaching polygons after introducing lines and angles, because students need to be familiar with line and angle vocabulary in order to classify polygons.
