Polygon SB File and Printables Description

This bundled file consists of my Geometry SMARTBoard File: Polygons
and my Geometry Printables: Polygons.
When used together, they are the perfect way to support your instruction of Common Core geometry standards. I created and used this file with my 4th grade students with great success, but it is suitable for grades 3-5.

There are 36 pages each in both the SMARTBoard file and the printable packet, for a total of 72 pages! This file covers all polygons from triangles all the way up to pentadecagons, (15-sided polygons!) Through interactive and engaging lessons, students learn about the attributes of polygons and how to identify, sort, and classify them. Students sort different polygons by number of sides, as well as classify triangles and quadrilaterals according to the properties of their lines and angles. They also learn the difference between regular and irregular polygons. There is even a fun project to do at the end called Welcome to “Poly-wood”, where polygons are the stars! Please download my preview file for more details.

IMPORTANT! You must have Smart Notebook or compatible software on your computer in order to use this SMARTBoard file. If you have a different type of interactive white board, please download the preview file first to see if the interactive features work.

Common Core Standards Addressed:
• 3.G.A.1: Understand that shapes in different categories (e.g., rhombuses, rectangles, and others) may share attributes (e.g., having four sides), and that the shared attributes can define a larger category (e.g., quadrilaterals). Recognize rhombuses, rectangles, and squares as examples of quadrilaterals, and draw examples of quadrilaterals that do not belong to any of these subcategories.
• 4.G.A.1 Draw points, lines, line segments, rays, angles (right, acute, obtuse), and perpendicular and parallel lines. Identify these in two-dimensional figures.
• 4.G.A.2 Classify two-dimensional figures based on the presence or absence of parallel or perpendicular lines, or the presence or absence of angles of a specified size. Recognize right triangles as a category, and identify right triangles.
• 4.G.A.3 Recognize a line of symmetry for a two-dimensional figure as a line across the figure such that the figure can be folded along the line into matching parts. Identify line-symmetric figures and draw lines of symmetry.
• 5.G.B.3 Understand that attributes belonging to a category of two-dimensional figures also belong to all subcategories of that category. For example, all rectangles have four right angles and squares are rectangles, so all squares have four right angles.
• 5.G.B.4 Classify two-dimensional figures in a hierarchy based on properties

I recommend teaching polygons after introducing lines and angles, because students need to be familiar with line and angle vocabulary in order to classify polygons.
