Geometry is full of vocabulary that students need to understand. A triangle is not just a triangle; there are acute, obtuse, right, equilateral, equivalent, and scalene triangles. There are so many different polygons, each with their own special properties. It takes a lot of practice to keep it all straight!

That’s the idea behind my sets of Geometry Vocabulary Cards. In this set, which features polygon vocabulary, you will receive cards for 30 key words relating polygons. Each card has either the word itself, the definition, or a picture, for a total of 90 cards.

The cards can be used in a variety of ways. When students are just learning the words, you might have them work with a partner and just make matching sets of 3. Later on, students can play a Concentration-type game using 2 out of the 3 cards, (for instance the name and picture), to make matches. (Have the players evenly divide the definition cards among them, and if they make a match for one of the definitions they have, it is worth an extra point.) Students can also play a version of “Go Fish” where they ask for cards to go with a particular word.

Words Included in this Set:
polygon vertices triangle right triangle acute triangle isosceles triangle obtuse triangle scalene triangle equilateral triangle quadrilateral parallelogram rectangle square rhombus trapezoid kite pentagon hexagon heptagon octagon nonagon decagon hendecagon dodecagon tridecagon tetradecagon pentadecagon line of symmetry congruent similar

I chose to include all the polygon names up to 15 sides, even though Common Core does not require it for 4th grade. You can choose not to use them but I think students enjoy learning big words, and the names are a great opportunity to discuss word origins and think about what other words have some of the same prefixes.

I offer them bundled as a set, as well.

I also have a set of Geometry Vocabulary Cards for Lines and Angles that uses the same background design. If you combine the sets, you have a comprehensive set of 2-D geometry terms for 4th grade!
