George and Martha SLP Guide - Group Therapy for Students with Mixed Goals
by Katie Mahaney, M.S., CCC-SLP
(For use with George and Martha by James Marshall)
As a Speech Language Pathologist working in schools, I always try my best to group kids according to similar goals, but because scheduling is always such a challenge, this was not always possible.
I as well as many other SLPs that I know would often find myself with a group of kids working on variety of different goals, so I am always searching for activities, games and resources that could be applied in many different ways in order to meet the needs of all of my students in the best possible way.
Incorporating literacy into speech therapy is always a great idea, and I believe that reading a book to a group of speech students often makes for an excellent enriching and interactive therapy session that is both enjoyable for the students and beneficial in multiple ways.
Reading a book with a group of my students and pausing to ask questions and facilitate discussion has also been one of the best ways I have found to ensure that I am targeting their goals in a short time. As many SLPs would agree, a typical 25-minute session can fly by very quickly and by the time all students in the group have arrived in the speech room and settled down, the productive content of sessions is often closer to 15 minutes or less. For this reason, I always want to make sure that especially with a group of students with mixed goals, my activities are ready and planned out as well as possible.
This literary guide can be used to target several goal areas at once. The only thing you need other than this guide is a copy of the classic children’s book George and Martha by James Marshall.
On the next page you will find the list of goal areas targeted in this guide. Thank you so much for your purchase and I hope you and your students enjoy and find it very helpful!
