ASSESS READING COMPREHENSION
PROMOTE CLOSE READING AND ACCOUNTABILITY
"1984" by George Orwell is a classic dystopian novel recounting one man's rebellion against an oppressive and restrictive regime. Rich with parallels to historical and modern societies, this story highlights themes surrounding propaganda, surveillance, misinformation, and mass control.
The prose of 1984 is straightforward but highlights complex ideas that should be expanded upon thoroughly. For this reason, I move through 1984 slowly with my students. I recommend reading two or three chapters per reading assignment, but your professional judgment knows best!
These reading questions are developed to assess a student's close reading of the text and have taken online summaries into consideration in order to motivate students to avoid using them as a replacement for the real text.
They are challenging, but students both enjoy successfully answering them and benefit from reflecting on their comprehension of the text. I weigh all Reading Quizzes as 5% of their overall grade so that consistent readers need not worry if they miss a correct answer here and there.
As always, a full answer key has been included with this resource. I will sometimes recap the entire summary of the reading homework before revealing the answers in order to peak student engagement. You can even award bonus points for students who contribute to the synopsis!
