Description

George Orwell's 1984 is a prescient piece of literature that is also firmly rooted in the past. In order to fully grasp the text as a whole, it is essential that students understand the impact of Karl Marx's ideals, Nazi propaganda, the rise of the USSR, and the fear of totalitarian dictatorships on the work as a whole.

This resource prepares students to make connections between history and the content of 1984 through a jigsaw learning activity. A jigsaw activity is a cooperative learning activity where students become “experts” in a topic and break into groups to share their findings with their peers. Just like an actual puzzle, each member of each group holds a necessary piece of information they must share with their peers, allowing students to develop as collaborators, thinkers, and teachers.

  • Post-Jigsaw Survey: A survey to help students evaluate their peers and their teaching after the completion of the class jigsaw.
