ANALYZE MAJOR AND REOCCURRING SYMBOLS

APPLICABLE TO AP LANGUAGE AND COMPOSITION

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS WITH EXAMPLES

"1984" by George Orwell is a classic dystopian novel recounting one man's rebellion against an oppressive and restrictive regime. Rich with parallels to historical and modern societies, this story highlights themes surrounding propaganda, surveillance, misinformation, and mass control..

Orwell's use of symbolism draws attention to the dark realities of this dystopian society in a subtle yet meaningful way. Guide students towards a deeper analysis of these symbols using the Symbol Tracker charts below. This analysis has students consider the textual evidence, description, important characteristics and associated thematic connections of each symbol before offering an analysis.

I model this analysis using the provided example for the symbol of Mr. Charrington's room. Students have this example at hand in order to conduct a similar analysis of their own.

Students will explore the provided symbols in the worksheet instructions, and be encouraged to identify and analyse symbols of their own discovery. For a more interactive activity, students can be divided into groups to investigate a single symbol and share their findings with the class.
