Poster Option #1: George Washington Carver Coloring Collaboration Poster: Coloring ~GREAT FOR ANY AGE~

This lesson is very easy. Each student is given one section of a large mosaic poster to color according to the instructions on each sheet. Once all sheets are colored and cut out, they are then assembled to reveal a large multi-colored mosaic/poster/mural of George Washington Carver in various colors. You will need crayons, colored pencils, or markers in green, pink, red, yellow, light green, purple, blue, and orange.

Poster Details

  • 36 pages
  • 6 x 6 grid
  • Final poster: Approx. 42 in. x 42 in. (depending on your printer settings).

Colors needed: pink/green, yellow/red, light green/purple, and orange/blue (in crayons, markers, or colored pencils).

Some teachers like to show their students what they will be making (that is why I have included a final example), and others like to keep it a secret until the end for a really fun surprise!

Poster Option #2: George Washington Carver Drawing Collaboration Poster: Drawing ~ Ideal for middle school and high school students ~

This lesson is not hard but is more challenging than the coloring version in lesson #1. In this lesson, each student will draw their own grid piece using a small version of their assigned gridcell as a reference. Once the pieces are drawn and cut out, the classroom poster can be assembled. This lesson engenders a lot of cooperation among students to get all of the drawings within the individual gridcells to line up well and produce a nice looking final poster of George Washington Carver. This is all about working together!

BONUS Activities:

I have created a variety of handouts that individual students can work on when they are finished with their poster piece. The handouts are for a variety of levels, so you can find one that fits your grade level. Included are:

  • Unscramble the portrait drawing
  • Unscramble the portrait cut and paste (with two grid variations)
  • George Washington Carver quote coloring page.
