Want to Encourage Students to Cite Evidence in the Text?


This pack was created to provide resources to meet the CCS with short, engaging nonfiction text. This pack contains one differentiated reading passage on George Washington. The freebie includes:


• Possible teaching points
• Three leveled passages about the same topic, with 4 questions. Students must cite text evidence by underlining answers and color coding the passage.
• Graphic Organizer for Responding to Text
• Interactive Notebook Page for Responding to Text (same as the graphic organizer)


All levels are noted in the bottom left of the page. Passages are a half page long and can be cut and pasted into interactive notebooks. Students can cut along the dotted line, splitting the page in half. Then, the students can glue the passage on the left side of the interactive notebook and the questions on to the right side of the interactive notebook. The pages can also be copied and completed on a whole sheet of copier paper, if the classroom does not use interactive notebooks.


For the passage, there is a page of possible teaching points. This page is perfect if the teacher decides to use the passage in small groups. The teaching points include the author’s purpose for writing the text, specific questions about the text to enhance student understanding, and a list of possible vocabulary to target. The vocabulary may be related to how difficult the word is to decode or a multiple meaning of the word. All of the questions and vocabulary on the teaching point’s page are different than the questions on the passage so that the teacher can use the passage questions as an assessment.


Also included are response activities, on two different levels. One of the activities is a lower level activity and the second activity is a higher level activity with less support. The activities are also available as interactive notebook pages.
