George Washington defined the role of the executive office at a pivotal time in our history. Help your students discover his value through simulations, games, hands on learning built into a BIE PBL model.
I. Effective Leader.
-Start off by connecting leadership skills to their own lives.
-Transition that to what is needed to be president.
II. Meet "the" Man.
-A word wall is provided as a starting place for student's "Need to knows"
-Several researched readings are provided. Start off with a reading and that comes with a guide to teach students note taking skills.
-A second guided practice is provided for students to apply their skills.
III. Foreign Conflicts.
-Students will delve into the French Revolution
but focus on how it impacts the early political parties. Students will be asked to determine which is more important personal rights or national security. As they read, discussion questions have been provided to get them thinking and asking them to make connections to today.
-Can treaties create problems? More discussion questions have been provided to help students make connections.
IV. Domestic Affairs.
-Two rebellions and two different outcomes. Students are asked to create a Venn diagram on the different rebellions and the impact they left behind.
-Students will read a recent article and then take part in philosophical chairs. A strategy that has them backing up their opinions with textual evidence.
-Students will look at the two developing political parties and will have to identify which group would have said what. In a fun game that will be a quick formative assessment.
V. Farewell Address.
-Abridged and chunked the Farewell Address is divided into four sections. Each with guiding questions and annotation guide.
-Chunked quotes from the Farewell Address and the students determine which topic George Washington was addressing.
-Discussion questions are included along with a guide on how to transition into their final product for their pbl.
