George Washington was an general, Founding Father, and president of the United States. This article takes kids on a short journey through George Washington's life. It covers his birth in Virginia in 1732 and through tough childhood and schooling. George's father died when he was only 11 and a few years later his brother died. He became heir to a large estate of over 8,000 acres. He needed hundred of slaves to work the land. Washington worked for Britain as a commander of the Virginia troops but they eventually rejected him as a commander and he returned to Mount Vernon. Britain was becoming more of a problem to the colonies and they hired Washington to lead the colonial forces against the British. He had some key victories. He retired again in 1783, but that didn't last long. He was called to duty again in 1785 to help unify the new states. Washington felt the states needed a constitution. At the Constitutional Convention in 1786, George Washington was chosen as president of the young United States. As a Founding Father and first president, he is known as the "Father of our Country."
