Finding nonfiction materials at an appropriate level for Presidents Day for young students is always difficult!! With that thought in mind, I created this Shared Reading PowerPoint about George Washington for Presidents Day in kindergarten (or first grade) classrooms!!
This book has one fact per page with illustrations to support young readers. Many sight words are used to support early readers as they begin to read nonfiction text.
Title Page: George Washington
Page 2: George Washington was born on February 22nd.
Page 3: He was born in Virginia.
Page 4: When he was a little boy, he cut down a cherry tree.
Page 5: He was a general in the American Revolution.
Page 6: He was the first President of the United States.
Page 7: We see his picture on the quarter.
Page 8: We see his picture on the one dollar bill.
Page 9: We remember him with the Washington Monument.
Page 10: We celebrate Presidents Day in February.
As you can see, this text is more difficult than the other emergent readers that I usually post; however, with opportunities for shared reading, kindergarteners can read this book successfully and learn about George Washington and Presidents Day as well. This book would also be great for first graders around Presidents Day!!

I also have a Reading and Writing Unit which includes this book, as well as a matching teacher version, a prewriting graphic organizer, writing papers, similar materials about Abraham Lincoln, a Presidents Day Word Wall, a word building page, and 2 word searches (different levels).
