Common Core relies heavily on informational reading and writing. This mini-unit provides an opportunity for students to read non-fiction text, analyze information from multiple sources, and complete an informational writing piece while learning about the importance of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. This is so much more than the traditional cute President's Day project. I have completed this unit with my first graders multiple years and I am always impressed with their collaboration, higher levels of thinking, and the informational report that is produced.
The unit takes students through gathering information about the two presidents and putting this information into a piece of writing that demonstrates their understanding of both presidents and how to compare and contrast two like subjects.
The entire unit is already aligned to the Common Core for you.
