Description

George Washington delivered his farewell address on September 1796, stating that he would not accept a third term as president. He was 64 years old and disheartened: the patriot, war hero, president, and national symbol had been unable to stay above the political arguments between the Federalists and the Republicans. In his address, he argues for a nation united rather than divided by parties, economic policies, and foreign affairs. In this assignment students are given opportunities to read excerpts from his speech.

In this activity, students begin by writing their own farewell address. Then, students read three excerpts from George Washington's farewell address and reflect on what is being said. This activity also gives a background to the speech and explores the general implications on future generations. Ready to print and use! Enjoy!
